$MARTLIVING® MAGAZINE
LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE TO
PROMOTE DIABETES EDUCATION

LAKE WYLIE, SC  (Oct. 23, 2002)  $martLiving® Magazine announces the launch of its new website dedicated to educate diabetics and non-diabetics about diabetes, a rapidly growing disease in America. The $martLiving® Magazine website, at www.smartlivingmagazine.com, is devoted 100% to providing current diabetes information to consumers. The introduction of this health-based website correlates with November's commemoration of American Diabetes Month.

$martLiving® Magazine, a direct mail magazine and its new website are  publications of Focus on Results, Inc. (FOR). FOR President and CEO Joe Moody, a diabetic for 17 years, was inspired to devote $martLiving® Magazine's new website to diabetes education after attending a class for diabetics. "The people in my class had no idea how to take care of themselves," says Moody. "That's when I realized how $martLiving® Magazine, in conjunction with our website, could make a difference in people's lives by promoting diabetes education."

The user-friendly website contains a bulletin board listing cities in alphabetical order. Each city will list local hospitals offering free diabetes education seminars and class schedules. As part of the $mart Diabetic™ Partner Program, consumers can obtain information about locally sponsored blood glucose testing sites and link directly to local retailers for discounts on diabetic supplies and healthcare products. Visitors to the site can also link directly to the American Diabetes Association website for detailed diabetes information.

$martLiving® Magazine owner Joe Moody was 31 years old when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. "As a sales manager, I had a stressful job and I didn't eat healthy or exercise," he explains. Moody credits his wife Pam, also his business partner, for becoming educated about diabetes and motivating him to regularly monitor his sugar levels and eat well. After taking three shots a day for 17 years, Moody began using an insulin pump last November. "The freedom of the pump is indescribable," he says. Insulin pumps cost approximately $5,000 and are worn similarly to a beeper. A catheter is inserted into the abdomen, hip or back, and the pump is programmed to continuously release insulin or provide quick doses as needed. Many insurance companies cover 80% of the cost of insulin pumps.

"Diabetes is of epidemic proportions in America because of our sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits," says Cynthia B. Floyd, a Certified Diabetes Educator and Family Nurse Practitioner with Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca, South Carolina. "We have begun seeing many cases of children with type 2 diabetes due to obesity. It's encouraging that the fast food industries are increasing their menus by adding salads. However, it's up to the consumer to choose healthy…low-fat dressings, broiled chicken, and cole slaw "

"Everyone you talk to knows someone who is diabetic or someone who is affected by diabetes," explains Moody. "I am determined to raise the level of awareness and educate people about diabetes using the most current information available."

$martLiving® Magazine was created to provide advertisers with a cost-effective medium for reaching consumers. $martLiving® Magazine is mailed to more than 650,000 homes throughout South Carolina, and select areas in Georgia and Kentucky. $martLiving® Magazine is a publication of Focus on Results, Inc., located in Clover, SC.
