There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.
THE FACTS ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETES (Previously known as Juvenile Diabetes)
The symptoms of type 1 diabetes can mimic the flu in children.
It usually occurs during puberty, around 10 to 12 years old for girls and 12 to 14 years old for boys.
There is a higher incidence of type 1 diabetes in Caucasians than in other racial groups.
The risk of developing type 1 diabetes is higher than virtually all other severe chronic diseases of childhood.
Type 1 diabetes sometimes runs in families. Brothers and sisters of a child who has type 1 diabetes have about 10% chance of developing the disease by age 50.
WHY ARE CHILDREN NOW DEVELOPING TYPE 2 DIABETES?
An ever-increasing number of children are developing type 2 diabetes, which is generally diagnosed among adults. Type 2 diabetes occurs in children who are:
Overweight (Up to 80% of kids are overweight when they're diagnosed).
Older than 10 years old and are in middle to late puberty.
Have a family history of type 2 diabetes.
A member of a certain racial/ethnic group (African Americans, Hispanic/Latino and Native American descent).
Get your children moving! Help them help themselves by preventing health problems and/or becoming overweight.
Sign them up for a sport they enjoy.
Go for walks together.
Join the local YMCA and enroll them in a training session to learn how to safely use the equipment.
* Teach children good exercise habits when they're young and they'll carry these over into their adult lives!
