JDRF Employs Cutting-Edge Research;
Ranks High in Financial Efficiency

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a national organization whose mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research. All $93,000 raised in the Pee Dee Walk to Cure Diabetes goes to the JDRF to fund the most innovative, cutting-edge research worldwide.

JRDF was founded in 1970 by parents of children with juvenile diabetes, a disease that strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Researchers don't know exactly what causes type 1 Juvenile Diabetes but they believe autoimmune, genetic and environmental factors are involved.

Gail Ginsberg, Executive Director of the JDRF's Palmetto Chapter says the Walk to Cure Diabetes is the largest fund raiser that the JDRF does worldwide. "It brings together corporate sponsors, churches, schools, families and children...all walks of life for a common cause of find a cure. This gives children hope when they see so many people supporting them," says Ginsberg.

Increased industry investment in diabetes technology is starting to produce results. A number of devices and their therapies are poised to become available to patients in the next few years. Promising developments include glucose monitoring, insulin delivery, an artificial pancreas, and drugs to treat diabetes complications.

The National JDRF has received high ratings for its financial efficiency, using more than 80% of its donations to directly support research and research-related education. In its annual rating of 200 nonprofit organizations, Forbes magazine chose JDRF as one of its top 10 picks that shine. SmartMoney Magazine ranked JDRF number 2 among health research organizations based on its use of most of its money for research programs, rather than for fund raising or administrative costs.
